The sailing team at the University of Miami was formed in 2004 and immediately gained momentum to become one of the most competitive sailing programs in the country.  The team qualified for its first ICSA Coed National Championship Semifinal in 2009, made it to its first Coed National Championship Final in 2011 and broke into Sailing World's top ten coed ranking in 2011.  The team also made it to the National Semifinals in 2010 and 2011, and won the Western National Semifinal in 2012.  That semifinal win qualified the team to its second consecutive National Championship Final (2012) and cemented the program as a major contender on the college scene.

In recent years, the team made strides to build on its founding success.  In 2016 the team raised money to purchase a new fleet of FJs and in 2017 the team returned to the ICSA Coed National Championship for the first time in five years.  For its efforts, the team was awarded the University of Miami Club Sport of the Year for both 2016 and 2017 out of more than 50 club teams at UM.

With the ideal sailing conditions in Miami and Biscayne Bay, UM is the perfect place for a collegiate sailing team. The team currently practices from the United States Olympic Sailing Center in Coconut Grove.  In addition to its fleet of eight 2016 Zim Flying Juniors (FJ's) the team also practices in a fleet of eighteen 2017 Club 420s, giving the program access to the two major fleets in college sailing.  The team also has 4 dedicated coaches from the Miami sailing community, including a former 3-time All-American and a 2009 US Sailing Coach of the Year.

College Sailing has its own governing body, the ICSA (Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association), and our team is part of the South Atlantic District (SAISA) which includes some of the most competitive sailing programs in the country like Charleston, University of South Florida, Eckerd College and Jacksonville University.  The team also travels to several inter-conference events each semester to compete against the best college sailing programs in the country.
